Scarlet Reef Hermit Crab (Paguristes cadenati) Care
The Scarlet Reef Hermit Crab, Paguristes cadenati, is also known as the Scarlet Leg Hermit and the Red Legged Hermit. These crabs come from the Western Atlantic Ocean, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. They have a bright red body and yellow eyestalks.
These crabs are omnivores and highly desirable in reef tanks because they will eat unwanted algae and any leftover meaty foods left in the tank by other tankmates. They can reach most cracks and crevices and will not both fish, corals nor other invertebrates. You should not need to feed them unless you have very little algae in the tank.
They require an aquarium of at least 1 gallon; in fact, it is recommended to have at least one hermit crab for every 1 gallon of aquarium water. They are peaceful to other tankmates EXCEPT to potential snails that have a shell that the hermit crab wants – they will kill snails for their shells.
