Magma Fairy Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus shutmani) Care
The Magma Fairy Wrasse, Cirrhilabrus shutmani, is a deepwater wrasse only discovered in 2017 and is a rare wrasse in the aquarium hobby. These fish have unique vibrant coloration with vivid red to orange to yellows. Colors between the females are similar and do change based upon the fishes mood. They will reach a maximum size of nearly 6 inches and are strong jumpers and need a tank with tight fitted covering to prevent them from getting out. They should be kept in a tanks with plenty of swimming room, some sand substrate, and rock work to hide and sleep in.
A deep sand bed is not needed for this wrasse to bury itself in at night. Instead they may form a mucus cocoon or wedge themselves into rock crevices. Should they form a cocoon to sleep in there is no need to remove it from the tank.
These wrasses is carnivores and require a diet rich in meaty foods, such as brine and mysis shrimp, high-quality frozen foods, pieces of fresh seafood, and flake and pellet foods. They need to be fed two to three times a day to stay healthy.
NOTE: Sometimes Magma Fairy Wrasses are difficult to get eating at first. If this happens, we recommend fortified live adult brine shrimp.
