Eight Line Flasher Wrasse (Paracheilinus octotaenia) Care
The Eight Line Flasher Wrasse, Paracheilinus octotaenia, is also known as the Eightline Fairy Wrasse and come from the Red Sea. These fish have brilliant red, yellow and orange bodies that are crossed by eight neon blue horizontal lines. Their colors and vibrancy may fluctuate depending on the mood of the fish and females are not as brightly colored as the males. When courting, the males will “flash” or extend their fins to attract a mate with their bright colors. These beautiful fish are active, peaceful, easy to care for, and reef safe.
Eight Line Wrasses can reach up to 4″, with males being larger than females, and require an aquarium of at least 55 gallons with plenty of live rock, hiding places, and a fine sandbed. They are good jumpers and should be kept in a tank with a cover. They do not need a deep sand bed to bury themselves in at night. Instead they may form a mucus cocoon or wedge themselves into rock crevices. Should they form a cocoon to sleep in there is no need to remove it from the tank as it is not harmful.
The Eight Line Wrasse is best maintained with one male to several females and should not be keep with more aggressive fish like dottybacks and some damsel fish.
Eight Line Wrasses are carnivores and require a diet rich in meaty foods, such as brine and mysis shrimp, high-quality frozen foods, pieces of fresh seafood, and flake and pellet foods. Feed them two to three times each day.
