Choati Wrasse (Macropharyngodon choati) Care
The Choati Wrasse, Macropharyngodon choati, is a lesser known and somewhat rare member of the leopard wrasse species and that primarily comes from East Australia. As with all leopard wrasses this fish needs a deep fine sand bed to live in and sleep. We recommend at least 4 to 6 inches of fine sand be both in any QT tank and the final display tank for them to be healthy. They require aquariums with tight fitting covers as they can be easily scared and will attempt to jump out of the tank.
The Choati Wrasse can reach up to 4″ and require an aquarium of at least 70 gallons with plenty of live rock and a fine sand bed. They will likely hide for several days when first introduced to a new aquarium.
It is important to note that these fish do not ship well due to the lack of sand in the shipping containers. You should be ready with a tank that has a deep fine sand bed and matches the SQ they will arrive in from us.
Note: This fish is intolerant of treatments that may contain copper.
The Choati Wrasse has similar dietary requirements as Mandarin Dragonettes and will spend it’s day searching for copepods and other tiny, almost microscopic crustaceans. This fish is carnivorous and must be fed a diet rich in meaty foods. They Will readily accept most meaty frozen foods such as mysis shrimp, krill, vitamin-enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped shrimp, clams, mussels along with high quality flake and pellet food. Feed small amounts 2 or 3 times per day. Be sure to supplement amphipods and copepods to their diet on a regular basis.
