Niger Trigger (Odonus niger) Care
The Niger Trigger, Odonus niger, is also known as the Red-toothed Triggerfish. These fish come from the Indo-Pacific region. Their body color actually changes from day to day, the colors vary from a blue-green to dark blue to a deep purple color. They have long, beautiful streamers on the tail.
Triggers are carnivores and require a diet rich in meaty foods, such as brine and mysis shrimp and pieces of high-quality seafood like squid, clams, shrimp, fish, and scallops. One of their favorite foods is live urchins.
Niger Triggers can reach up to 12″ and require an aquarium of at least 180 gallons with plenty of live rock with hiding places. They are aggressive and should not be kept with very peaceful, slow-moving fish. They are best kept in a fish-only aquarium.
They are not considered reef safe.
