Blue Throat Trigger (Xanthichthys auromarginatus) Care
The Blue Throat Trigger, Xanthichthys auromarginatus, is also known as the Gilded Triggerfish, Blue Chin Triggerfish, and the Blue Jaw Triggerfish, These fish come from the Indo-Pacific region. They have a grayish-blue covered in small white spots and their fins are rimmed in yellow. Males have a blue patch that extends from the mouth to the gills; females do not have the blue patch.
Triggers are carnivores and require a diet rich in meaty foods, such as brine and mysis shrimp and pieces of high-quality seafood like squid, clams, shrimp, fish, and scallops. One of their favorite foods is live urchins.
Blue Throat Triggers can reach up to 9″ and require an aquarium of at least 125 gallons with plenty of live rock with hiding places. They are semi-aggressive and should not be kept with very peaceful, slow-moving fish.
They are considered reef safe “with caution” because although they will not both coral, they may eat some invertebrates and attack smaller fish.
