Stars & Stripes Puffer (Arothron hispidus) Care
The Stars & Stripes Puffer, Arothron hispidus, is also known as the Whitespotted Pufferfish. These fish come from the Indo-Pacific and Eastern Pacific regions. They have a light grey body. The top of the body is covered in white spots and the belly has maultiple dark lines. These fish lack pelvic fins and use the pectoral fins for movement.
These pufferfish are carnivores and require a diet rich in meaty foods, such as mysis and brine shrimp, high-quality frozen foods and flake and pellet foods They should be fed multiple times a day.
Stars & Stripes Puffers can grow up to about 18″ and require an aquarium of at least 180 gallons with live rock caves and crevices and wide-open swimming areas. They are semi-aggressive and should be kept with peaceful fish that are larger than themselves (otherwise, they may be eaten.)
They are not reef safe.
NOTE: Pufferfish will puff up when stressed or to scare away potential predators. Do not intentionally cause a pufferfish to do this as it is very stressful on their body and can actually cause them to become ill and die. If you need to transfer a puffer, please use a container vs. a net to catch and transport them.
