Overview
The Golden Moray Eel, Gymnothorax miliaris, is also known as the Goldentail Moray Eel. This eel comes from the Western Atlantic Ocean. The color depends on where the eel was caught and will vary between a golden yellow color with multiple black spots, a dark brown color with white spots or a yellow body with dark brown mottling.
Eels are carnivores and require a diet of fresh fish, clams, and crustaceans. Most will eat prepared frozen foods including brine, mysis, clams, squid, octopus, as well as live prey. They are nocturnal hunters and will eat any fish or invertebrates they can find in an aquarium. Many have very poor eyesight and will easily mistake fingers for food and bite you. They should only be fed every 3 to 4 days. NOTE: Some moray eels do have a poisonous bite.
Golden Moray Eels require an aquarium of at least 120 gallons with plenty of rockwork in which they can hide during the day. They must also be kept in a well-sealed tank because they are incredible escape artists and can squeeze through all but the smallest of openings.
