2 Stripe Damselfish (Dascyllus aruanus) Care
The 2 Stripe Damselfish, Dascyllus aruanus, is also known as the Whitetail Dascyllus, the Humbug Dascyllus, and the two Stripe Damselfish. These fish come from the Indo-Pacific region. They have a white body with three vertical black Bands. The caudal peduncle and tail are white and the dorsal, pelvic, and anal fins are black.
Although damselfish are colorful, hardy, reef safe, and affordable, these little fish can be very feisty and overly aggressive towards their tank-mates. They will do best housed with large angelfish, tangs, triggers, and dottybacks.
Damselfish are omnivores and require a diet rich in both meaty and plant foods, such as mysis and brine shrimp, marine algae, and flake food.
The Damselfish can grow to be about 3″ and can be housed in aquariums as small as 30 gallons with plenty of live rock. These cute little fish are territorial and once acclimated to an aquarium, they consider the entire tank to be “their” territory.
These fish are reef safe and will not bother coral or invertebrates, but may be very aggressive towards other fish.
This species is happiest as a pair or in a shoal. A shoal should consist of one male to five or more females. When a male is needed they can change gender from male to female. They love to hide in stony corals with branches when available.
