Black Cardinal (Apogon melas) Care
The Black Cardinalfish, Apogon melas, comes from across the Indo-Pacific region. They have an all-black body with big black eyes.
Cardinalfish are carnivores and require a diet rich in meaty foods, such as mysis and brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood and flake food.
The Black Cardinal will only grow to about 4″ and can be housed in aquariums as small as 30 gallons with plenty of hiding places. They are best kept in small groups of up to 5 with other non-aggressive fish.
These fish are considered reef safe “with caution” because they may bother smaller fish and invertebrates in the tank.
