Horned Heniochus (Heniochus varius) Care
The Horned Heniochus, Heniochus varius, is also known as the Horned Bannerfish, Humphead Butterflyfish, and the Heniochus Brown Butterflyfish. These fish come from the Indo-Pacific region. They have a mostly brown body that lightens to a golden-tan color as it reaches the dorsal fin, a white band behind the head, and a diagonal white band the runs back from the dorsal fin and through the tail.
Butterflyfish are omnivores and require a diet rich in both meaty foods and plant-based foods. They will eat flake food, algae, frozen plankton, and mysis and brine shrimp. They should be fed several times a day.
The Horned Heniochus can reach lengths of up to 7″ and will do best in an aquarium of at least 100 gallons with plenty of live rock to graze on and hide in. They will thrive in large fish-only aquariums with lots of open swimming space and live rock hiding places.
The fish are considered reef safe “with caution” because they nip at corals and sessile invertebrates, such as clams.
