Four Eyed Butterfly (Chaetodon capistratus) Care
The Four-Eyed Butterfly, Chaetodon capistratus, is also known as the Mock-Eye Butterflyfish. These fish come from the Western Atlantic Ocean, ranging from Massachusetts to the northern part of South America. The body is a whitish-yellowish color with diagonal brown lines that create a chevron pattern. There is dark band through the eyes, a black eyespot ringed in white near the tail, and the tail is yellow.
Four-Eyed Butterflyfish are carnivores and require a diet rich in meaty foods, including frozen plankton, mysis and brine shrimp. They should be fed several times a day. When first introduced to a tank, it may be difficult to get them to eat and can be encouraged with live food such as feeder shrimp and bloodworms.
They can reach lengths of up to 6″ and will do best in an aquarium of at least 120 gallons with plenty of live rock to graze on and hide in. They will thrive in large non-aggressive, fish-only aquariums with lots of open swimming space and live rock hiding places.
The fish are not reef safe and will eat various types of corals.
